What are UPS Peak/Demand Surcharges?
UPS Peak/Demand Surcharges are additional charges UPS applies to shipments during peak season when shipping volume increases. Surcharges are added in addition to regular shipping costs and are based on a percentage of the total shipment cost.
When do UPS 2022 peak season surcharges go into effect?
This year’s UPS Peak/Demand Surcharges will apply to shipments under certain service levels from October 30, 2022, until January 14, 2023. Larger shipments and shipments that require additional handling will encounter a surcharge from October 2, 2022, until January 14, 2023.
UPS 2022 peak season surcharges
This year’s UPS peak season surcharges will apply to the following service levels: UPS SurePost, UPS Ground Residential, UPS Next Day Air Residential, and UPS Air Residential. These charges will be in place from October 30, 2022 until January 14, 2023.
These surcharges will impact customers who ship more than 20,000 packages during any week in this time period. Charges will be applied weekly to each package over 105% of the customer’s baseline weekly average volume for the applicable service level. The more customers surpass this baseline, the greater surcharge they will incur.

Large package and additional handling surcharges
Peak season surcharges will also be applied to oversized packages, packages that exceed weight limits, and packages that require additional handling. These surcharges apply to U.S. domestic, U.S. import, and U.S. export shipments.
